We sometimes hear the words of the Sunday Gospel without understanding the question the evangelist is addressing. The evangelists were primarily pastors, not historians, even if they used what they knew of Christ’s history to speak to the real questions of their readers.
What was Jesus Doing? What he always does. Noticing the unseen poor ordinary people.
In following Jesus, the miracle worker, early Christians never imagined their lives and heritage reduced to the rubble in Roman persecution. How could they make sense of all this?
